Metro Animal Services (MAS) will launch its “Summer Feline-Fest” on Saturday, May 10 and it will run through June and July. Summer is the busiest time of year for MAS, especially in regard to the increased number of cats & kittens entering the shelter. Because of this increase all cat and kitten adoption fees are discounted. Adult cats, 1 year or older are $50 and all kittens are $65, the regular adoption fee for a cat or kitten is normally $85 and up (discounts do not apply on cats or kittens adopted prior to May 10).
“The good news is that there are plenty of cats and kittens to choose from and the bad news is that there are plenty of cats and kittens to choose from. It is very sad to see the hundreds of unwanted mothers and kittens that will come through our door each month during the summer”, said Jackie Gulbe assistant director for community relations. “People don’t realize the breeding capability of two cats, its mind boggling to think that just two unaltered cats can produce 11,606,077* offspring in just nine years.”
All cats and kittens are spayed or neutered, licensed, microchipped, vaccinated and come with a collar and tag, and a coupon book valued at $100 from Feeders Supply. People interested in adopting can visit Metro Animal Services at 3705 Manslick Road, call 361-1318 or go to our website at: www.Louisvilleky.gov\AnimalServices
Adoption hours:
Mondays and Saturdays -- 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.
Tuesdays and Thursdays --10 a.m. to 6 p.m.
Wednesdays and Fridays --10 a.m. to 7 p.m.
One of the contributing factors to the cat over population problem is our community’s attitude toward cats. Many people see them as “wild”, almost like squirrels; they feed them and provide shelter for them, not realizing that they are domesticated animals and that they are required to be licensed and confined to the owner’s property. Cats are very prolific and can start breeding at 5 month of age. In 2007, MAS received 5,827 cats and kittens as strays/owner turn-ins. MAS’ low-cost S.P.O.T. spay/neuter program is available for people who need help getting their animals fixed. Spaying and neutering is the number one way to end the pet over population problem in our community
Metro Animal Services has the largest number of animals for adoption at a single location and is the largest animal control agency in Kentucky.
