Metro Animal Services is looking for some help with our Foster Care Program. We are recruiting responsible individuals and families who have a soft spot for cats and dogs, especially kittens and puppies. This spring/summer program will require a commitment of 4- 6 weeks of your time. You will be responsible for socializing, feeding, and enjoying the company of a needy family of homeless animals until it is time for them to enter into our adoption program.
Why do we need foster homes?
- MAS is an older facility with very limited space to care for nursing mothers and their young.
- MAS, accepts any and all homeless animals, unfortunately many of these animals are carrying contagious but easy-to-treat illnesses, such as upper respiratory infections. It’s like a great big day care for animals. If they are in a foster environment kittens and puppies will have a chance to build immunity through vaccinations and antibiotics. Once they have completed their course of vaccinations and are strong and healthy they can return to the shelter with the ability to resist common illnesses.
- Fostering socializes animals unaccustomed to human handling and prepares them for homes with children, other animals, and new situations.
- Fostering can be a fulfilling and rewarding volunteer opportunity you can accomplish from home! Fostering also gives a pet a good start in life!
It’s a great way to get your puppy and kitten “fix” without the lifetime commitment. This is a great opportunity for teachers looking for a summer hobby and for parents to teach their children about infancy and motherhood without allowing personal pets to bring unwanted animals into the world.
Some things to consider:
- All adoptions from foster care must be approved by MAS Adoption Coordinators.
- All animals are the property of MAS while in foster care.
- All personal pets must be fully vaccinated, licensed, and separated from foster animals if necessary.
- Foster homes agree to submit to a home inspection and in-home interview by MAS staff.
