Humane Education in the Classroom

Metro Animal Services offers the only classroom humane education program in animal welfare in the region. We offer traditional classroom visits to interactive core-content related lessons. Our visits can be accompanied by a certified assistant animal and/or involve a tour of the shelter.

We are members of the Partnership for a Green City Alliance, Pet Groups United, The National Association for Humane Educators, and the American Humane Association.

Preschool: Dog Bite Prevention; Animal Safety; Basic Needs of Pets

K-12: Standards-based lessons include but are not limited to Responsible Pet Ownership; the History of Domestication; Breed Geography; Basic Needs of Pets; Careers with Animals; Budgeting for a Pet; Pet Overpopulation; Dog Fighting Prevention

Special Lessons for Portfolio preparation in narrative poetry and memoirs.

After School Clubs: Students in grades
5-12 can develop animal welfare clubs through school in order to increase their participation with the shelter and have hands-on learning experiences with animals. Clubs require administrative approval and a teacher sponsor. They can also function as a committee of Environmental Clubs.

Adult Education: Once a month we hold a new Volunteer Orientation session. Contact us for an opportunity to increase your knowledge of animal welfare in Louisville!
