Bicycle for Transportation
March 2008 Update
"If current oil prices hold, American drivers should expect to pay new record high prices for gasoline which could easily reach $3.50 per gallon or more by summer. In some regions of the country the average price could approach $4 per gallon."
Geoff Sundstrom
American Automobile Association
With the price of gas continuing to rise, using your bicycle instead of your car to get around is not only easy on your pocketbook, it allows you to get exercise and get where you need to go at the same time!
This section of the Bike Louisville website provides great information from the non-profit organization Bicycling for Louisville. Whether you're a regular bicycle commuter or you're thinking about commuting, these resources will help you share the road, make your commute more enjoyable and increase safety for you and others on the road.
Tap Into the Commuter Community A wonderful emerging resource for cycle commuters in the Louisville area is the Utility Bike mailing list, a listserv designed specifically for people who use their bicycle as their primary means of transportation. Check out their website to subscribe to the mailing list and join the discussion.
A great way to find other bike commuters in the Louisville area is to visit the Louisville Bicycle Club website and either post a note in their forum, or scroll to the bottom of their site to join the KyCycList online mailing list where you can post questions and learn from other area commuters.
Gear Up! Of course, having the right equipment is key. Many local bike shops have cycling gear designed for commuting or they can order what you need. Many employees of bike shops commute to work and can be a good resource for questions and sharing tips.
