Learn about Current & Proposed Bike Projects
Bike-related projects underway or proposed include:
Whipps Mill Road (In Progress) Increase accessibility for pedestrians across the rail road tracks along La Grange Road around the Whips Mill/La Grange Road Intersection. Increase accessibility on Whips Mill Road from Linden Lane to New Lagrange Road for Bowman Elementary students. In turn allow a safer and more direct route to the YMCA. Provide bike lanes and sidewalks from YMCA to Shelby Campus. Map: Whipps Mill Road between Lyndon Lane and New LaGrange Road (354 KB PDF file)

This project is slated to begin in late 2009. Check this website for more updates in the near future.
Johnsontown Road in southwest Louisville (Complete) Just over 1 mile of bike lanes were installed on Johnstown Road from Thompson Lane to Terry Road and sharrows were installed from Terry Road to Trade Port Drive. The projected date of completion is July 22, 2009. See map (186 KB PDF File) See images: 1 2
Westport Road (In progress) Bike lanes are being installed on Westport Road in eastern Louisville from Hubbards Lane to Herr Lane. The project is slated to be complete in the spring/summer of 2010. See map (215 KB PDF file)
River Road Corridor Management Plan (In Progress) Visit the River Road page on the Public Works website for the full information on this project.
Harrods Creek Bridge Improvements (In Progress) When the Harrods Creek Bridge improvements are complete by the end of the year, the bridge will have two lanes. Each lane will be 12 feet wide – much wider than the current total bridge deck width of 14 feet for the one bridge lane. The wider lanes on the bridge will make it safer for cyclists.
The new construction will echo the design of the original bridge. The current support arches will remain intact and will be incorporated into the new bridge, and the old guardrails will be replicated on the new wider bridge deck. The new bridge will look very similar to the original – just with a wider deck to handle traffic more safely.
Until the project is complete, cyclists should use an alternate route as the bridge will be impassible during construction.
