Bicycle Friendly Community Overview
Louisville Metro's Bike Louisville program is really a community partnership working to make Louisville more bike-friendly. The program started with the formation of the Bike Louisville program in the Planning and Design department. In 2005, Mayor Abramson held Louisivlle's first bike summit and set a path for Louisville to become a gold-level bicycle friendly community by 2015, as defined by the League of American Bicyclists (LAB). In 2007 Louisville reached the bronze level, a year ahead of schedule. This year we're working to reach the silver level. The first bike summit was co-organized by the Louisville Bicycle Club who remain a key partner.
Bike Louisville Teams
In 2008, Mayor Abramson revised the Bike Louisville program by forming the Bike Louisville Team. The teams are centered around the 5 E's of a bicycle-friendly community and feature wide participation from both inside and outside of local government. In February of 2009, Louisville held its second bike summit. The bike teams have now refined the goals of the bike plan based on the criteria of the LAB, ideas from team meetings and comments from the second bike summit.
