Brightside is the recent recipient of an IABC/PRSA Landmarks Award (Award of Merit) for the Brightside eNewsletter. Cynthia Knapek, Brightside Director / Diana Alvey, editor / Caitlen Herron, designer.

The Brightside eNews was created as an environmentally-friendly way to inform our customers. Brightside is a public/private agency of Louisville Metro created in 1986 by Mayor Abramson to keep Louisville, Kentucky clean, green and environmentally aware. The eNews was created to increase participation in Brightside's cleanups, fundraisers and other activities. By getting the word out about Brightside's clean and green programs electronically, we are helping the environment by saving paper, printing and mailing costs.
The judges liked that there were clear results shown by Brightside's efforts to increase program participation. Since sending out the eNews, the subscriber list has grown from 450 to 1,100 in just a few short months. Overall fundraising is up 9.5% from last year. Membership sales were up 10%, spring compost sales up 30% and the volleyball teams from the annual fundraiser increased 10% over last year. Participation in our spring community-wide cleanup increased from 900 volunteers in 2005 to over 1,700 in the Spring of 2006.

Thanks to all of the Brightside volunteers, donors, business partners and friends who are helping to make Louisville a more clean and green community!

In addition, H.J. Bud Schardein, executive director of MSD was inducted into the IABC/PRSA Communications Hall of Fame. The other inductee was John Hindman, vice president of public affairs and communications for UPS Airlines.
