Beautification

BrightSites
Project BrightSite was started in 1987 with the purpose of taking small parcels of city-owned property and partnering with businesses or other agencies to get plant material donated and keep the newly-landscaped area maintained. That tradition continues today. BrightSites are mini botanical gardens located across the metro area. Studies show that green oasises such as these build civic pride and inspire neighbors to keep the area looking its best.

Neighborhood Naturescapes
Brightside strives to find ways for all Louisville residents to become engaged in keeping our community clean and green - that is why we are so excited to present to you our newest program. NatureScape Grants are designed to help neighborhood groups and other non-profits keep the public spaces of the community looking its best by connecting your group with the needed resources to create the beautification project of your choosing.

Community Gardens
The community garden program is pleased to announce that Jefferson County Cooperative Extension Service will be taking over the management of the garden program. This is a wonderful opportunity as they will be able to provide educational services and horticultural strategies that could improve your garden. They will be available to answer your gardening questions and are planning to host several gardening classes throughout the upcoming year. Contact Denise Peterson 502-569-2344 for more information. Click here to see their educational gardeners toolbox series.

Most gardens started on vacant lots. Areas that were once weedy and neglected were turned into lush green spaces that provided a place for neighbors to come together and grow fresh produce to feed their families. Often there is enough to share; every year community gardeners donate many tons of vegetables to local shelters. Two of the gardens have been run in partnership with local schools and provide outdoor classroom learning opportunity for students.

Interstate Wildflower Program
Recently Brightside added wildflower plantings near the Gene Syder Freeway.  More areas are currently planned and contributions of large and small dollar amounts are needed.

Flower Shower
Help beautify the Metro area.  Your non-profit group can receive free flowers to plant in public spaces.  Twice a year Brightside distributes thousands of flats of flowers to hundreds of non-profit groups. Please visit our calendar of events often for non-profit beautification opportunities. Registration for the fall FlowerShower program will post in July.
