Litter Prevention
Organize a Cleanup
Brightside organizes several large-scale cleanups for Louisville throughout the year. However, you don't have to wait for Brightside to announce the next Community-Wide Cleanup to do your part towards having a litter-free city. Any group which would like to have a cleanup can be provided gloves, trash bags and a limited quantity of brooms, rakes, shovels at no cost. Simply pick a day and a place, round up a few people and get to work! Click here for a Blitz Form (Word) or click here for a pdf file.
Litter-Free Events
Make your event litter-free! Brightside will be glad to coordinate your Litter-Free Event with Metro Solid Waste Management. Simply click here to download the Litter-Free Event Form as a pdf file or here as a word document. Brightside will also provide bags and gloves to your volunteers that clean up after the event. We do request that you dispose of your recyclables, but Metro Solid Waste will pick up your bagged trash containers.
Adopt-a-Mile Program
Comparable to the state's Adopt-a-Highway program, Adopt-a-Mile allows groups to adopt a metro roadway. To recognize your cleanup efforts, Brightside will install a sign on the road indicating that this Brightside Adopt-a-Mile is clean, thanks to your organization!
Adopt-a-Block
Schools are invited to Adopt-a-Block and agree to maintain that block with regularly scheduled cleanups.
Anti-Litter Campaign
Brightside is striving to make our hometown a litter free Louisville. Pitch your trash, no fouls or misses, just TAKE IT TO THE BASKET! We want to reduce litter to make our streets cleaner and safer for our citizens and visitors. Help us pass the word and the initiative to TAKE IT TO THE BASKET, call 502.574.1000 to volunteer or gain additional information.
Litter-Free Louisville
Metro government spends about $2 million dollars every year to clean up litter and trash, including:
- Making corrections officials available to supervise inmate crews on cleanup patrols.
- Providing support services for organized neighborhood cleanups including debris and trash bag collection, sidewalk sweeping and walk-behind vacuums.
- Removing illegal signs from right-of-ways including utility poles.
- Providing trash receptacles for downtown pedestrian traffic.
- Contracting to remove litter along highways and interstates.
- Educating the public on how litter impacts our community and changing behavior.
