About 500 volunteers sporting blue T-shirts and wielding digging tools fanned across downtown Thursday in a massive effort to beautify the center city in advance of next week’s Kentucky Derby.
The occasion was the 14th annual Brightside Pre-Derby Cleanup sponsored for the second straight year by PNC Bank. The workers represented nearly 40 businesses and organizations that signed up to help, said Lisa Gunterman, Brightside spokeswoman.
Facing sunny skies but a chilly wind, the crews assembled at Jefferson Square and ate a chicken lunch donated by KFC Yum! Brands and drank soft drinks supplied by Coca-Cola before being dispatched to nearly every corner of downtown from First to Ninth streets and Broadway to Main.
