Event Details:
The Jewish Community Relations Council’s annual community-wide Yom HaShoah (Holocaust Remembrance Day) Commemoration “Pouring Out the Heart: Learning from Personal Holocaust Stories” will be Monday, April 28, 7 p.m. at the Bomhard Theater in the Kentucky Center for the Arts.
This year’s program will feature excerpts from a locally produced film in which Catholic and Jewish middle school students interviewed Holocaust survivors who now call Louisville home. In addition, two Israeli soldiers, participants in the Hatikvah (the hope) Program who will speak about the Holocaust from an Israeli point of view. There will also be opportunities to remember those who perished in the Holocaust with prayers and ceremony.
Yom HaShoah Chair Fred Whittaker, who teaches at St. Francis of Assisi, and his students teamed up with Jewish teens from the JCC’s Teen Connections program to produce the film. When the project was born, Whittaker and his students set out to “capture some moments of Holocaust testimony mindfully” through questions from students that “elicit the response and insight only Holocaust survivors have.”
