OConnell Files Suit for Hospital Merger Information
Tuesday November 29, 2011
County Attorney Mike O’Connell today filed suit against the University of Louisville to obtain documents relating to the proposed merger of University of Louisville Hospital, Catholic Health Initiatives, and Jewish Hospital and St. Mary’s HeathCare.
The suit seeks the release of public records held by the University of Louisville regarding the merger, and comes as a result of the university’s November 21st response to a November 3rd request by O’Connell under the Kentucky Open Records Act.
“The University of Louisville and University of Louisville Hospital are public institutions. The proposed merger, with University Hospital as its cornerstone, will be a major change in this community’s healthcare landscape, with tremendous implications.” O’Connell said.
“The public has a right to know the details of this merger. To date, there has been no public disclosure of records, documents or financial information that detail the intricacies of the merger and how it would affect the on-going healthcare of hundreds of thousands of people, including indigents currently receiving care at U of L Hospital,” said O’Connell. “Those are the answers I seek, on behalf of the citizens of Metro Louisville.”
According to CHI and other sources, the cost of the merger will be $320,000,000 and result in CHI holding majority control of the hospitals. Closing date for the merger, which requires Governor Beshear’s approval, is reportedly projected to occur as early as December 31, 2011.
