Adult Dental Care - Mobile Dental Health Unit
The Metro Department of Public Health and Wellness’ mobile dental unit provides adult emergency dental care at locations throughout Louisville.
It is equipped with two dental chairs and digital imaging capability and is staffed with a dentist, two dental assistants and a driver who also serves as a dental clerk.
The mobile dental health unit was purchased in 2009 with $387,000.00 in federal funds secured by Congressman John Yarmuth.
The Metro Department of Public Health and Wellness has a second mobile health unit to provide such services as dental screenings and immunizations to children in schools throughout Louisville. Last year the department used its other mobile unit to provide dental screenings at elementary schools to more than 1700 children in partnership with Smile Kentucky and at middle schools to more than 185 children with immunizations provided by the Metro Department of Public Health and Wellness.

Pediatric Dental Care - Mobile Dental Health Unit
The Department of Public Health and Wellness is currently partnering with Smile!Kentucky and Jefferson County Public Schools to use it’s mobile van to bring dental screenings, sealants and fluoride varnishes to elementary school children.
Smile Kentucky! is a community partnership that tackles what the U.S. Surgeon General has called the number one common, chronic childhood disease, tooth decay. Smile Kentucky! Recruits volunteer dentists and hygienists to do free oral health screenings at school to children in grades three through five. In addition, over 60 health educators provide instruction to every student in kindergarten through sixth grade on brushing, flossing, the importance of fluoride and how to identify the amount of sugar in snacks.
