Wellness Classes & Training

The Louisville Metro Department of Public Health and Wellness is committed to supporting the wellness of the citizens of Metro Louisville. There are many ways we define wellness:

  • As the active process of becoming aware of and making choices toward a more successful existence (National Wellness Institute).
  • Promoting or maintaining good health rather than the correction of poor health.
  • Proactively taking responsibility for one’s health.
  • Recognizing that good health is balance of the Mind, Body and Spirit in individuals, populations and communities.
  • Adopting behaviors which prolong and enhance the state of being healthy, and by extension, life itself.
  • The condition of good physical and mental health especially when maintained by proper diet and exercise (American Heritage dictionary)

Citizens are encouraged to take advantage of wellness programs and classes, including:

Faith and Health Network
The Faith and Health Network meets on the first Saturday of every other month at the Department of Public Health and Wellness' Gray Street location. At these meetings, to be held in February, April, June, August, October and December 2007, members of various faith organizations receive training and materials to enable them to involve their faith communities in wellness activities. Program examples include:

• Body and Soul, American Cancer Society
• Home CPR kits, Louisville Metro Emergency Medical Services (limited availability).
• Search Your Heart curriculum, American Heart Association

Representatives from all faiths are welcome. To join the Network, receive training or request more information, call 574-8045.

Smoking Cessation
Use of tobacco kills more than 440,000 Americans each year, including nearly 8,000 Kentuckians. We can help you stop smoking. Call (502) 574-STOP (7867) or visit our Tobacco Prevention and Cessation Program web page or e-mail Stop Smoking. Would you prefer to receive free phone counseling?
