A Happy and Healthy New Year to All!
Thanks to everyone who attended the December Advisory Council Meeting! It provided a great kick-off for our upcoming Healthy Hometown Pedestrian Summit planned for Spring of 08. Thanks to Mayor Jerry Abramson, Dr. Troutman and Pedestrian Summit Chair Bud Schardein for “getting us off on the right foot.”
The Pedestrian Summit Project Team will start conferring with our consultants, Toole Design and Gresham Smith & Partners, on January 7th. Consultant ideas and input will be part of our regular updates.
The Pedestrian Summit already has its own webpage with the temporary address of www.louisvilleky.gov/health/mhhm/pedestriansummit. A shorter, easier address will be forthcoming. We encourage you to go to this site for the latest updates and news. This site also gives you the option of signing up for our Pedestrian Summit Listserve, which will provide all updates in a timely manner. Our intent is that you use this site for all information and queries. Specific requests and ideas will be forwarded to the appropriate contact for follow-up and response. Those without online access are encouraged to call Jon Villines at 502-574-0104 with questions or comments.
A tremendous amount of information will be released over the next few weeks as we announce dates, topics, and locations of Community Workshops, date and location of the Summit, and continuing plans for reaching a wide and diverse audience.
Our goal is to provide this community with productive Community Workshops that lead to an informed Healthy Hometown Pedestrian Summit that concludes with a workable and manageable Community Walkability Plan. Working together, we can all help make that happen. Thanks in advance for your continuing support and participation!
Be an award winner! The Mayor’s Healthy Hometown is again teaming up with GLI to bring you the 2008 Healthy Hometown Worksite Wellness Awards. Applications are available at www.louisvilleky.gov/mhhm and the awards will be presented at the GLI Annual Awards Banquet scheduled for February, 2008. Awards will be presented in three categories including small (1-99 employees), medium (100-499) and large (500 +) businesses.
If you haven’t already done so, please complete the Advisory Council Participation Survey that was sent out via email and return it to Marigny Bostock or 400 East Gray St. Louisville, KY 40202! Let Marigny know if you need another copy.
Mark your calendars! Subway Restaurants has signed on to once again sponsor our Memorial Day and Labor Day Healthy Hometown Hike & Bikes! These extremely successful family-oriented events are drawing up to 3,000 people to the waterfront for hiking, biking, information about healthy choices and just plain ol’ fun! The 2008 events will be held on May 26th and September 1st. We’ll update plans as they are confirmed. You won’t want to miss what the American Bicycle League has designated “the largest communitywide, non-competitive biking events in the country!
Subway is also sponsoring our annual Healthy Hometown Hike in Jefferson Memorial Forest. More details will follow about this fun-filled event which coincides with beautiful fall foliage.
Our Mayor’s Healthy Hometown Movement Advisory Council Committees continue to meet and work to prioritize important and innovative action plans. We encourage committee members to attend all committee meetings and any Council member can attend any and all committee meetings as they choose. All meetings are held at the Louisville Metro Health Dept., 400 East Gray Street (unless otherwise noted). The next committee meetings are:
