First Flu Case Reported in Jefferson County

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (January 2, 2008) The Louisville Metro Department of Public Health and Wellness has reported the first confirmed case of the flu for Jefferson County.
“We are into the flu season, but it’s not too late to get a flu shot,” said Dr. Matt Zahn, medical director for the Dept. of Public Health and Wellness. “We encourage everyone to get a flu shot, but especially those at high risk for serious illness from the flu.”
Those considered “high risk” include:
- People age 50 and older
- Children 6 months to 5 years old
- Household members and caretakers of infants younger than 6 months
- Pregnant women
- People with chronic medical conditions such as diabetes, heart disease, and asthma
- People with weakened immune systems
- Children ages 2 to 18 years on long-term aspirin therapy
- Residents of long-term--care facilities
- And health-care personnel who provide direct patient care

Flu shots are also given by appointment at the following sites. Phone the site to make an appointment.
Flu shots are $25. The Department of Health and Wellness will also offer the pneumococcal vaccine for $35. Medicare Part B and Passport will cover the cost for those with those insurance plans.
