LOUISVILLE, Ky. – (May 12,2008) The Metro Department of Public Health and Wellness at 400 E. Gray Street will be open on Sunday, May 18 from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. for lifeguard and pool attendant candidates to take the written test and to obtain the necessary permit to work at pools in Louisville. All public pools in Louisville are required to have a lifeguard or certified pool attendant. Pools more than five feet deep must have a lifeguard. Pools five feet and under must have a lifeguard or certified pool attendant.

The Public Health and Wellness Department will also be open weekdays until 6 p.m. Monday, May 19, through Friday, May 30, to accommodate lifeguard and pool attendant candidates. The test and permit will be offered between 8:30 a.m. and 6 p.m. Candidates must begin the written test by 5 p.m. (Note:  The Department will be closed Monday, May 26 for Memorial Day.)

To obtain a permit, lifeguard candidates must first pass an annual swim test. Candidates may phone 574-6650 to register for the swim test. After passing the swim test, lifeguard candidates also must pass the written test held at the Public Health and Wellness Department. Lifeguard candidates taking the written test should bring the following:

• Picture ID with age of candidate. (Lifeguard candidates must be age16 or older.)
• Social Security number
• Lifeguard card
• First Aid card
• CPR card (Must include professional Adult, Infant and Child CPR)
• $20 in cash or check payable to Louisville Metro Government

To obtain a permit, pool attendant candidates must first pass a poolside rescue class. Candidates may phone 574-6650 to register for the class. After passing the poolside rescue class, pool attendant candidates also must pass the written test held at the Public Health and Wellness Department. Pool attendant candidates taking the written test should bring the following:

• Picture ID with age of candidate. (Pool attendant candidates must be age16 or older)
• Social Security number
• First Aid card
• CPR card (Must include professional Adult, Infant and Child CPR)
• $20 in cash or check payable to Louisville Metro Government
