Public Health and Wellness to Offer Free HIV Testing

Monday June 21, 2010

The Metro Department of Public Health and Wellness will offer free anonymous HIV testing in conjunction with the observance of National HIV Testing Day. Dates, times and sites are as follows:

Thursday, June 24, Salvation Army, 831 S. Brook St., 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Friday, June 25, 850 S. Barrett St. Suite 302, 2 p.m. to 5 p.m.

Saturday, June 26, Jo-Mitra’s Hair Salon, 5040 Poplar Level Road, 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Testing will be done using the Oraquick oral swab method, which does not require a blood stick. Test results will be available within 20 minutes. No appointments are necessary.

“Of the one million people in the United States who are HIV positive, nearly 200,000 don’t know their status,” said Public Health and Wellness Director, Dr. Adewale Troutman. “There are now medications and treatments that can save lives. Early diagnosis is the answer. I encourage people be tested and to know their HIV status.”

National HIV Testing Day is an annual campaign coordinated by the National Association of People with AIDS. Testing for HIV is also available weekdays at the Specialty Clinic of the Department of Public Health and Wellness. Phone 574-6699.
