World AIDS Day Service to be Held December 1
Louisville’s 2007 World AIDS Day Observance will take place December 1, 2007 at the Central Presbyterian Church located at 318 W Kentucky Street. There will be a reception with light drink and refreshments beginning at 6 p.m. The World AIDS Day Memorial and Celebration of Life will begin at 7:00 p.m.

Flu Shots Now Offered Every Weekday at Gray Street Site
The Louisville Metro Department of Public Health and Wellness is now offering flu shots at its 400 E. Gray Street site from 9:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. on weekdays until December 14 (except Thanksgiving Day, November 22 and Friday November 23). Flu shots are available to anyone 6 months of age or older who wants to avoid getting the flu this winter. No appointments are necessary

Public Health and Wellness Has Prescription Drug Discount Card That Can Be Used by All Residents
The Louisville Metro Department of Public Health and Wellness now has a discount card to help consumers cope with the high price of prescription drugs. The free prescription drug discount cards are available through a program sponsored by the National Association of Counties (NACo) and the Kentucky Association of Counties (KACo). The card offers an average savings of 20 percent off the retail price of commonly prescribed drugs.

The Center for Health Equity located in the Louisville Metro Department of Public Health and Wellness recently awarded $38,000 in grants to four local agencies. The grants will be used to show how residents can improve the health of their communities by working to develop policies that address the social and economic factors that contribute to poor health.

Extended Hours Offered for Lifeguard and Pool Attendant Testing

Gray Street will be open on Sunday, May 20th from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. for lifeguard and pool attendant candidates to take the written test and to obtain the necessary permit to work at pools in Louisville. New Farmers Market Opens On East Market Street
new farmers market serving Phoenix Hill and nearby neighborhoods held its grand opening today. Featuring fresh flowers, plants and home-grown fruits and vegetables, the market is located in the parking lot of the Felice Winery Complex, 829 E. Market St. The complex also houses Mellilo’s Italian Restaurant and The Bodega, a grocery/café. Louisville now has 13 farmer’s markets, from Portland to the Highlands, with others planned.

Health Department Offering Free Classes for Managing Weight
With 65 percent of Americans being overweight or obese, it’s a good bet that losing weight is on many New Year’s resolution lists for 2007. The Louisville Metro Health Department has several free one-hour classes, as well as a day long workshop, to provide assistance for losing weight and eating healthier for the New Year.
