Nutrition Basics

Proper nutrition can help you to live a healthier and, perhaps, a longer life.  Try to get a balanced diet (PDF 300KB) by eating according to My Pyramid.  Be sure to eat a variety of foods within each food group.  This helps you to get a proper balance of nutrients you need.  Part of eating by the pyramid means getting at least 2 fruit and 3 vegetable portions daily, or “5 A Day”, a slogan you might have heard lately.  Getting enough nutrients may be difficult for some people for a variety of reasons.  Check with your doctor or with a registered dietitian about whether you need a supplement.

Good nutrition also involves moderation in your intake of the following: fat, saturated fat,  cholesterol, sugar, alcohol, sodium.

Use the Nutrition Label to choose healthy foodsPortion sizes should be appropriate for your calorie needs. Including plenty of foods that have fiber and drinking plenty of fluids promote good health, as well.
