Healthy Child Care

Healthy Child Care is a program of the Louisville Metro Department of Public Health and Wellness funded by the KIDS NOW-Kentucky Early Childhood Initiative.  Healthy Child Care serves child care providers and the children and their families receiving out of home child care. Healthy Child Care Consultants assist child care providers to insure quality child care through staff education and policy development and by the provision of up to date health, safety and nutrition information. Our Healthy Child Care Consultants are credentialed by the state of Kentucky.

Program Goals and Objectives

Children in child care will have healthy environments for optimal physical and social-emotional development.

  • Improve hand washing and sanitizing practices
  • Increase up to date immunizations
  • Improve knowledge of medication administration
  • Improvement in dental hygiene practices
  • Improve knowledge of blood borne diseases
  • Increase ability to recognize and manage social-emotional health issues
  • Increase physical activity level

Children in child care will have safe environments for optimal physical and social-emotional development.

  • Increase knowledge of reporting requirements and signs of child abuse and neglect
  • Promote disaster safety drills
  • Increase knowledge of infant safety hazard prevention
  • Implement SIDS prevention measures
  • Increase knowledge of toddler/preschool safety hazard prevention
  • Increase knowledge of school age safety hazard prevention
  • Reduce playground safety hazards

Children in child care will have a well balanced nutrition program that promotes optimal physical growth.

  • Increase knowledge of food guide pyramid recommendations
  • Improve menu planning
  • Increase knowledge of symptoms and treatment of food allergy
  • Improve food safety and handling

 Healthy Child Care Services

  • Aid in development of health and safety policies
  • Review and update health and safety policies
  • On-site and telephone consultations
  • Clock hour training for providers of child care
  • Playground safety assessments
  • TB risk assessments for providers of child care
  • Bimonthly newsletters
  • Information to parents on child health and safety issues
  • Link children, providers and parents to community health resources

Healthy Child Care Consultants are located at Community Coordinated Child Care (4C). Consultants work in conjunction with the 4C staff to ensure collaboration and coordination regarding health, safety and nutrition needs impacting the quality of child care.
