Teen Initiatives

Though Teen Birth Rates have declined over the past decade Metro Louisville Teen Birth Rates still remain higher than the national average and the U.S. has the highest teen birth rate of all developed countries. Through the Teen Pregnancy Prevention Program, the Louivsille Metro Deprtment of Public Health and Wellness provides:
 

  • A grant to Jefferson County Public Schools to provide PSI (Postponing Sexual Involvement) and RTR (Reducing The Risk) curriculum to students.  These curriculum assist students in making good relationship choices and healthy choices about their bodies.
  • An Abstinence-Based grant to the Jefferson County Department of Human Services to provide TYPE (Teen and Youth Program of Encouragement). This mentoring-based program provides young people with an opportunity to have a forum in which to discuss relationships and healthy choices.
  • Presentations to community groups and schools about Family Planning and other Teen Pregnancy issues including Sexually Transmitted Infections.
  • Resource materials including pamphlets, videos, an Empathy Belly and Baby Think It Over Dolls to help community groups and individuals make informed choices about their health.
  • A teen board known as STOPP (Students Taking On Pregnancy Prevention) comprised of teens and community partners to raise community awareness around Teen Pregnancy issues.
  • Condom Distribution 
  • Family Planning Classes 
     

A grant to Teen Pregnancy Prevention Intervention (TPPI, Inc.) to provide the THINK (Teaching Health Issues Now in Kentucky) Peer Education Program.  This program allows for teens to teach other teens about sexuality and relationship issues. Sexuality Education 

Scientific facts and information are obviously essential to our developing attitudes and behavior patterns which prepare us to cope with the day to day concerns, conflicts and pleasures arising from our sexuality. Sexuality is a fundamental dimension of human awareness and development. Sexuality education is a constant process starting at birth and continuing throughout one’s life.
