Healing Futures Fellowship Class of 2014 visits Frankfort

For six weeks, beginning June 30, 2014, the Center for Health Equity worked with 25 young people from across Louisville in our Healing Futures Fellowship Program. They had the opportunity to learn about many important public health issues, and focus on team building, health equity, injury and violence prevention, conflict resolution and racial healing, and leadership in our community.

Each year, Fellows work on group projects to highlight issues which advance equity.

The Environmental Issues group focused on cleaning up our waterways, including Beargrass Creek by dedicating human resources to focuss on the problem.

The Racial Healing group examined how to reduce the disproportionality of suspension rates of students of color.

The Injury and Violence Prevention group focused on addressing programming for young people during the summer and keeping incidents of violence down.

The Media group focused on countering the negative messages that the media can portay of young people by developing their own positive message of being themselves.

The Education group considered the impact of encouraging mediation (quiet time) practices in schools to reduce mental, emotional and physical stress in students.
