Mayor's Mile

Louisville is making walking easier with a new series of “Mayor’s Miles” markers being unveiled throughout the city.

Mayor’s Miles are a distance-marking system for walking paths. Ground markers and pole signs designate every 1/10th of a mile to help facilitate walking for groups and individuals.

Currently there are Mayor’s Miles in:
  • Cherokee Park
  • Shawnee Park
  • California Park
  • Thurman-Hutchins Park
  • Iroquois Park
  • Waterfront Park
  • University Hospital, Jackson St. entrance
  • Spalding University
  • Louisville Water Company Reservoir, Frankfort Ave.
  • Downtown Development Corp. – 4th Street Pedway – Galt House to Fourth St. Live!

New Installations:

Would you like a Mayor’s Mile at your worksite or in your neighborhood?

Groups wishing to install a Mayor’s Mile should consider the following:
  • Who will use it and how will they get to it?
  • What pedestrian amenities, such as shelters, benches, trees, and restrooms, are near the route?
  • What is the condition of the pavement or sidewalk? How wide is it? Is it obstructed in any permanent way?
  • Do the route’s sidewalks have accessibility features such as curb cuts which allow wheelchair users or people with strollers or carts to use it comfortably?
  • Are there destinations nearby?
  • Are there any dangerous road crossings on the route? Care should be taken to avoid routes where this is the case.
Some Mayor’s Miles are funded by the Mayor’s Healthy Hometown Movement through the federal Communities Putting Prevention to Work grant as well as the Louisville Water Company. Businesses can sponsor their own Mayor’s Mile
