Mayor Hands Out $22,500 in College Scholarships

Money given to students in public, assisted housing

LOUISVILLE (July 17, 2008) – Fifteen college students who live in public housing or Section 8 rental homes were awarded $22,500 worth of college scholarships today.

Mayor Jerry Abramson handed out the money at Mabel Wiggins Family Investment Center and praised the students for their dedication. He was joined by Kimberly Bunton, the city’s director of Housing and Family Services.

“These students know that to have best jobs of tomorrow they must obtain the best skills today,” Abramson said. “I applaud their tenacity and dedication to achieving their goals. I wish them continued success.”

Over the past 22 years, the Louisville Metro Housing Authority has awarded 351 scholarships worth more than $1 million to residents of public and assisted housing. The program is funded by Section 8 reserves. Section 8 is the federal program that provides housing rental vouchers to families.

To receive a scholarship, each student must have successfully completed an application, prepared an essay and completed an extensive interview process.

Each recipient also must have a high school diploma or have completed a GED program, maintain at least a 2.0 grade-point average and plan to go to school full-time at an accredited college or vocational training program.

“Education is the key to unlocking their potential for career development,” said Tim Barry, housing authority executive director. “We are proud of these students and glad to have the opportunity to provide the financial assistance needed to pursue their dreams.”
