Urban Renewal Commission
The Urban Renewal Commission studies urban renewal plans for certain areas, considering land acquisition and demolition candidates, while proposing the removal or reclassification of various structures, neighborhood improvements and rehabilitation goals.
The Commission can execute the powers of eminent domain for mixed-income housing opportunities and other projects that support economic and community development.
The only active urban renewal project is the Russell Urban Renewal project, located within the historic Russell neighborhood, and is bounded by S. 15th Street, Broadway, Congress Alley and S. 21st Street.
The Ouerbacher House is a historic home in the Russell Urban Renewal area, a property that is ripe for redevelopment. It currently is in the hands of the Landbank Authority.
The final major project of the Russell Urban Renewal project is the Cedar Street Development (PDF File), a new residential neighborhood of premium housing on Cedar Street, between 19th and 20th Streets.
The Urban Renewal Commission is comprised of five commissioners appointed by the Mayor.
