Earned Income Tax Credit Info and Free Tax Preparation

The Louisville Asset Building Coalition Volunteers Income Tax Assistance (VITA) offers tax help for working and low-to-moderate income (less than $37,263 income) taxpayers at these locations. The coalition is a group of more than 60 organizations united to help the working and low income tax filers to achieve greater financial independence. Volunteers from area businesses, non-profit groups and government agencies will staff the sites.

The assistance is open to those eligible for the earned income tax credit (EITC). Taxes will not be prepared for individuals who own a business, received any capital gains or losses in the sale of stock, or own a home and paid in excess of $5,000 in mortgage interest.

Individuals need to bring the following items with them to the assistance site: all W2 forms from employers, 1099 forms for those who need them, a picture identification card, Social Security card or Individual Taxpayer Identification Number for all members of the household, a copy of the 2004 tax return, a copy of a divorce/child custody agreement if applicable, child care provider name, address and tax identification number, any other tax related documents received, and a voided bank check for automatic deposit.

Information: 581-7262 or
www.louisvilleabc.org.

Senior citizens 60 and older and people with low and middle incomes may get assistance in completing income-tax forms through April 15. Taxpayers are offered the choice of electronic filing or paper filing.

Taxpayers should bring federal and state income-tax booklets if the booklets were mailed to them. Also, bring a copy of 2004 income-tax returns, statements of income for 2005, unemployment compensation statements, records that cover adjustments to income, the Social Security cards of everyone in the household and all documents related to any stocks sold in 2005.
