Algae Blooms in the Ohio River Causing Taste & Odor Issues
The recent dry weather has created taste and odor issues for some Louisville Water Company customers. This is not a health issue. The water is safe to drink; it’s an aesthetic issue.
The lack of rain allows sunlight to penetrate into the Ohio River and promote algae blooms, which can give the finished drinking water a slight musty/earth taste. Not everyone will notice the taste; really depends on your sensitivity!
Louisville Water Company uses powdered activated carbon at both of its treatment plants to minimize the impact on taste. However, the dry weather has created larger than normal spikes in algae bloom.
This issue may continue for the next several days, depending on weather conditions.
