Board of Water Works and Committees
Louisville Water Company was incorporated in 1854. On March 6, 1906, Kentucky State Legislature enacted legislation that called for the City of Louisville to become the sole stockholder of the company -- at the time only 51 shares had remained in private hands. The act replaced the Board of Directors with the Board of Water Works and allowed the mayor to appoint four members, subject to approval by the aldermen. The act also stipulated that free water would be provided to the city and the company would become tax-exempt. The city would not be responsible for the company's debt and all improvements had to be financed from income.
