Louisville Water Company, MSD & Metro Donate $25K To Provide Clean Water in Haiti

LWC and MSD each gave $10,000 to EDGEBud Schardein (MSD) and Greg Heitzman (LWC) with 2 water purification systems to aid in the earthquake relief effort for Haiti. Outreach, a Louisville-based charity that is in Haiti providing water filtration and purification systems.  Louisville Mayor Jerry Abramson also directed $5,000 in city money to help the group install these mini water-treatment plants in Port-au-Prince.

EDGE Outreach is trying to raise $500,000 to purchase, install, maintain — and train others to maintain — as many filtration and chlorination units as possible. The purification units cost $5,000 each. A major airline has committed seats and cargo space on its planes bound for Haiti to carry EDGE staff, volunteers, and equipment.

“We are grateful for the support from the city of Louisville, Louisville Water and MSD” said Mark Hogg, Executive Director of EDGE Outreach. “In less than a week this community has rallied to help the thousands in need.”

Once installed, each unit can provide pure drinking water for up to 10,000 people, so the potential for helping desperate people in Haiti is significant.

“These portable systems will help fulfill a basic human need in Haiti, safe drinking water” said Greg Heitzman, President and CEO of Louisville Water Company. “This humanitarian effort is at the core of our mission, helping to ensure public health. We wanted to do something now for the people of Haiti; this emergency response effort will help thousands of Haitians in the coming weeks.”

Bud Schardein, MSD executive director, said his agency was eager to help. “We are honored to make a financial commitment to do our part to help the Haitian people,” he said. “Every donation, no matter how large or small, makes a difference.”

“The money we donate today will literally save lives and help families who are in desperate need of clean water to survive,” First Lady Madeline Abramson said during a news conference at EDGE’s offices. “I encourage all citizens to help Haiti by donating to respected charities like EDGE, the American Red Cross, and many others providing relief.”
