On Site Chlorine Generation for BE Payne Plant

Louisville Water’s Board of Water Works has approved a project that will allow the company to produce its own supply of chlorine at the B.E. Payne Water Treatment Plant in Prospect.

On-site chlorine generation uses salt, water and electricity to produce a dilute form of sodium hypochlorite for water treatment. The process allows Louisville Water to only produce the amount of chlorine needed each day for water treatment and eliminates a community risk. The transport and storage of liquid chlorine represents a significant risk to employees and the community.

Louisville Water first installed the technology at its Crescent Hill Plant in 2011 and based on its success will add the innovation at the B.E. Payne Plant. The Crescent Hill Plant has a capacity of 180 million gallons of water a day; the B.E. Payne Plant has a capacity of 70 million gallons.

Louisville Water will advertise for bids in the spring of 2013 and expects to complete construction by the end of 2014. The estimated cost is $9.5 million and includes the construction of a new building, similar to what was constructed at the Crescent Hill Plant. Louisville Water completed its first on-site chlorine generation facility in May of 2011 at a cost of $11 million.
