WaterWorks Museum Opens March 1 of 2014 at Louisville Water Tower Park
Tuesday December 17, 2013
The interior restoration project at Louisville Water’s original 1860 pumping station is complete and Louisville Water is ready to open the “WaterWorks Museum” inside Pumping Station No. 1 on March 1, 2014.
The museum, located in the west wing of the Pumping Station highlights water’s connection to the community through film, photographs and pieces of the original water system. The museum will be the centerpiece of Louisville Water’s public and school-based tour programs which currently welcome more than 10,000 people annually to the site. Louisville Water will host special family and community events at the museum and on the grounds that will include local partners in science, history and public health.
The Louisville Water Tower and Pumping Station have long been a popular destination for weddings and festivals. Louisville Water will now manage the private rentals of this facility. The restoration project added new restrooms, a warming/catering kitchen and an improved interior space for private events.
The water tower and pumping station are listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The restoration project took a little over a year and included taking the building back to closely resemble its 1860 structural appearance; removing up to 90 layers of paint, and restoring a spiral staircase and original brick and wood.
The Board of Water Works, the governing body for Louisville Water, has approved rental rates and fees for Louisville Water Tower Park. Evening rental rates for Pumping Station No. 1 range from $600 Monday – Thursday and $1,500 Friday – Sunday. Rates for the grounds at Louisville Water Tower Park are based on anticipated attendance.
Admission to the WaterWorks Museum ranges from $5 for adults, $4 for seniors and $3 for youth. Children under five are free. The museum will offer discounts for families and those with a military and student ID.
