Governing Magazine Says Abramson Among Top Public Officials of the Year
Monday November 3, 2003
Governing Magazine has named Mayor Jerry Abramson one of the “Top Public Officials of the Year.”
Dubbed “Merger Maestro” by the monthly magazine, Abramson is one of 11 public officials profiled the November issue. Others named include Alabama Gov. Bob Riley and Charleston Mayor Joe Riley.
The magazine says Abramson has had “to join the functions and personnel of two separate governments while trying to reshape the new entity into something grander, to make merger worthwhile.”
The magazine cites as successes in Abramson’s first year budget cutting initiatives to make government more efficient and efforts to encourage expansion of Ford Motor Co.’s plants and Republic Airlines’ decision to open a headquarters and hub in Louisville.
“I’m honored to receive this recognition on behalf of our hometown,” Abramson said. “The people who deserve the credit are the citizens who had the vision to merge our governments and the thousands of people on our staff and throughout Louisville who are working to make it a success.”
Abramson will travel to Washington Nov. 13 to receive the award. In 1990, Abramson was named “Most Valuable Public Official in City Government” by City & State newspaper and also “Municipal Leader of the Year” by American City & County Magazine.
