Metro Parks Reopening Horse Stables In South Louisville’s Iroquois, McNeely Lake Parks

Friday September 19, 2003

Mayor Jerry Abramson today announced the two riding stables in Louisville Metro’s park system are re-opening today at two South Louisville Parks -- Iroquois and McNeely Lake.

Metro Parks recently selected Dream Maker Stables to operate the two riding stables. Dream Maker, which is locally owned, was selected after a competitive bidding process.
“Perhaps more than any place in the world, Louisville is a community that identifies itself with horses,” Abramson said. “So many families and children want the pleasure of an occasional horse ride or they want the opportunity for their kids to learn to ride.”

Abramson said that over the past several months, the parks system received numerous calls about the availability of the stables. Iroquois’ stables had been closed for several months. McNeely Lake has not been operating for several weeks. Contracts to operate the stables with two private vendors had expired.

Abramson added that having one operator for both stables would provide more consistent operations and create cost-efficiencies.
Dream Maker’s contract calls for the stables to be open daily through Nov. 1. The level of winter operations will be left to Dream Maker’s discretion. After winter, the stables will re-open on a regular basis by April 1.

Horse rides will cost $20 an hour, with pony rides for $10 an hour and lessons beginning at $40. There will be 15 horses at each stable, along with additional ponies.

Most of the horses involved will be quarter horses and will come from existing stock at Dream Maker Stables.

Abramson said Dream Maker Stables is owned and operated by Mitchell Warren at 8711 Brown Austin Road in Fairdale. Warren has been in the horse business for nearly three decades. The stables have offered riding lessons and day camps for several years.

McNeely Lake Park’s stable is located at 6711 Mt. Washington Road and can be reached at 231-9011. Iroquois Park’s stables are located at 7000 Sanders Gate Road and can be reached at 367-1116.
