Abramson Names Director of Office for Women

Mayor Jerry Abramson today announced that Maria Gabriela Alcalde will serve as Director of the Louisville Metro Office for Women.
Alcalde will focus on policies within government and outside of it that impact women, ranging from domestic violence and safety issues to health policy. Alcalde also will on forging and community partnerships and seeking grant funding to expand on programs within the office. The Office for Women is within the Louisville Metro Department for Human Services.
“Because of Gabriela’s background, I’m excited that we can take this office and its duties to a new level of responsibility and excellence,” Abramson said. “Gabriela will be working collaboratively with a number of departments in our government on high-priority issues and concerns.”
Alcalde currently works at the Institute of Bioethics, Health Policy and Law at the University of Louisville College of Medicine. Her work there focuses on grant writing and research. Alcalde also has worked in Washington, D.C. as a policy analyst and consultant for the National Conference of State Legislatures.
She is a graduate of the University of Louisville and has a master’s degree in health policy from Boston University. Alcalde, who will begin in her new position on March 15, will earn an annual salary of $45,000.
