BRIGHTSIDE TEAMS-UP WITH VOLUNTEERS TO BEAUTIFY LOUISVLLE FOR DERBY

Mayor Jerry Abramson and Bank One will kick off the Brightside/Bank One Pre-Derby Cleanup on Wednesday, April 21 at 2 p.m. at Jefferson Square, located at Sixth and Jefferson Streets across from Metro Hall. Downtown cleanup areas include River Road to York Street, from 2nd Street to 9th Street, and River Road to Jefferson Street, from 2nd Street to Jefferson Street. The cleanup also includes 31 blocks of the West Broadway corridor, from 9th Street to Shawnee Park entrance.

About 300 volunteers from 40 local businesses will pick up litter and add mulch to tree wells throughout downtown and along West Broadway from 2 to 4 p.m. & and from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Additional volunteers can sign-up until 10 a.m. on the day of the cleanup.
 
“The Pre-Derby Cleanup has become an annual tradition for our downtown community,” said Mayor Abramson. “Neighborhoods across Louisville Metro have worked hard this spring to make our hometown clean and beautiful for our Derby visitors.”

Free lunch is provided for the volunteers courtesy of Yum Brands/KFC. Lunch is from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. at Jefferson Park.
 
Volunteers will be working from six starting points during 2 to 4 p.m.:
· Jefferson Square, 6th & Jefferson

· Theater Square, 4th & Broadway · Louisville Metro parking lot, 6th & Market

· White Castle on 1st Street and Market Street

The late afternoon cleanup from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. will start at Slugger Field parking lot at 5:30 p.m. and work in the East Main Street area near the ballpark. A complimentary KFC dinner is provided from 5 to 6 p.m.

v This is the seventh year Brightside has sponsored the Pre-Derby Cleanup. It has become Brightside’s largest one-day cleanup and is a successful April tradition to make Louisville clean and green for our Derby visitors.

v Bank One is the title sponsor.

v The kickoff for the event is Wednesday, April 21, 2 p.m. at Jefferson Square Park, Sixth & Jefferson Streets. It is located across from Metro Hall.

v Over 300 volunteers from 50 local businesses and organizations will participate in this year’s event.

v Volunteers will mulch tree wells, pick up litter, and clean debris from public areas. Each volunteer will receive a T-shirt, gloves, and a free lunch courtesy of Yum Brands/KFC.

v Volunteers can pick up their complimentary KFC lunches from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. at Jefferson Square Park, Sixth & Jefferson Streets. Picnic tables will be in park for lunch.

v Brightside and Louisville Metro partner with the Louisville Downtown Management District (LDMD) to coordinate the logistics of the cleanup. The Louisville Metro Department of Public Works and Solid Waste Management also are partners to make the cleanup possible.
