Mayor to Host Informational Public Meeting

Mayor Jerry E. Abramson will host a public meeting to kick off the area’s all hazards mitigation planning process. This process is required under federal law to help communities better prepare for natural disaster events and to ensure communities are eligible for grants to support mitigation planning. The May 24th meeting will be held at the University of Louisville, Shelby Campus, at Founder’s Hall from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00. Presentations and handouts will be provided to attendees to explain the planning process and how citizens and local organizations can get involved.
Louisville Metro already has a strong foundation for the mitigation planning process through its past emergency management and mapping efforts. Louisville Metro also is one of eight communities selected to participate in a FEMA-sponsored pilot project effort to test the use of a new software tool Hazards U.S.- Multi-Hazard (HAZUS-MH). Other communities selected include: Portland, OR; Indianapolis, IN; Austin, TX; Annapolis, MD; New York City, NY; Kansas City, KS; and eight counties in Wyoming.
The FEMA pilot projects are testing HAZUS-MH to assist communities in identifying, profiling, and assessing potential losses associated with earthquakes, floods, and hurricanes. Louisville Metro pilot project efforts and results will be overviewed during the public meeting.
In addition, FEMA, state, and local representatives will provide more detail regarding mitigation planning requirements, local mapping efforts to support natural hazard planning, next steps, and opportunities for the public to be involved in the process.
About 150 participants are expected to attend the meeting, including: the Mayor, Louisville Metro Emergency Management Agency, Louisville/Jefferson County Metropolitan Sewer District personnel, the State Hazard Mitigation Officer, Federal Emergency Management Agency personnel, and experts in area mapping efforts and hazard risk assessment and mitigation planning.
