Section of Baxter Avenue To Close As Repairs Made To Retaining Wall

Friday August 27, 2004

A section of Baxter Avenue will be closed starting Monday as a safety precaution while repairs are being made to a retaining wall, the Louisville Metro Public Works Department announced today.

A section of the retaining wall between Castlewood Avenue and Edenside Avenue in the Highlands has become loose and is moving into the curb lane, said Dan Curtis, manager of Traffic Operations with the Public Works Department.

As a result, Public Works officials will close about 250 feet of the curb lane on Castlewood near the retaining wall and a section of Baxter Avenue between Edenside and Castlewood as repairs are being made.

Money for repairs of the retaining wall is included in Mayor Jerry Abramson’s proposed “Foundation for the Future” bond issue, which is currently being considered by the Metro Council. Repairs could take several months, depending upon weather conditions.

Curtis said Public Works officials will try to ensure that traffic can continue running through the affected area, although delays may be possible. There are dual left turn lanes at the intersection of Castlewood and Baxter avenues onto Baxter.

Curtis said the closures are necessary to ensure that motorists have a safe distance to merge into the outer lane and complete a left turn.

The closures will begin after morning rush hour on Monday.
