Abramson Directs Metro Government Flags Flown at Half-Staff to Honor Disaster Victims
Monday January 3, 2005
Mayor Jerry Abramson today directed flags on Louisville Metro Government buildings and grounds be flown at half-staff to pay tribute to the victims of the recent earthquake and tsunamis in Asia.
“The devastation on the coasts of the Indian Ocean reminds us just how fragile our world is. We will fly our flags at half-staff today through Friday out of respect for the hundreds of thousands affected by this catastrophe,” Abramson said.
The mayor also urged residents who wish to assist with the relief effort to contact the American Red Cross or another reputable aid organization.
“It’s quieting to think of such a disaster occurring here,” Abramson said. “When such a terrible tragedy strikes thousands of miles away, many people want to help but don’t know how, or feel they’re too far removed to be of assistance. Actually even the smallest contribution can help.”
According to the American Red Cross, the simplest and most direct way to assist with the relief effort is with a financial contribution to its International Response Fund. Those wishing to contribute can call 1-800-HELP-NOW, visit www.redcross.org, or send a check to American Red Cross, Attn: International Response Fund, P.O. Box 1675, Louisville, Ky. 40201-1675.
