Abramson Makes Final Four Wager With Illinois Mayors
Thursday March 31, 2005
Louisville Mayor Jerry Abramson today announced a friendly wager with his fellow Illinois city leaders on the outcome of Saturday’s Final Four match-up between the University of Louisville and University of Illinois.
“I just decided to add a little spirited fun to Saturday night’s game,” Abramson said. Abramson issued the challenge to Urbana Mayor Tod Satterthwaite and Champaign Mayor Jerry Schweighart, the leaders of the twin cities the Fighting Illini call home.
When Louisville wins Saturday, the mayors in Illinois will send Abramson a bottle of fine champagne and the city leaders will wear University of Louisville shirts.
If the Cardinals can’t find their way to the arena and Mayor Abramson is forced to pay up; he will send a bottle of Kentucky bourbon to both Illinois mayors and will be forced to wear the Fighting Illini’s orange and blue.
“We have a feeling that Illinois won’t leave us seeing – or wearing – red,” said Satterthwaite and Schweighart.
Abramson has not decided which brand of bourbon he would send in the unlikely event of a Louisville defeat. “Like the Cards, I don’t expect to lose,” Abramson said.
