New Downtown Bike Lane Created to Encourage Bicycling

A new bike lane has been created on the east side of Jackson Street from Broadway to Main that will give cyclists an easier route to many downtown locations. It is now open to the public.
This lane is one of many that Louisville Metro Government and the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet (KYTC) will create to promote increased bicycling in Louisville as a result of recommendations from the Louisville Bicycle Summit held last February.
Jackson Street’s bike lane is the first of several bike lanes Louisville Metro and KYTC will install over the next several years in Louisville. The promotion of cycling for fitness, an alternative mode of transportation and as a fun activity is a priority for realizing the Mayor’s Healthy Hometown initiative.
Bike lanes are marked lanes in the public right-of-way that are for use by bicyclists only. These lanes are marked with a bicycle symbol and arrow indicating the direction of travel. Motorists are not allowed to travel or park in the bike lanes and are subject to a fine if they do so.
Bike lanes encourage the safe interaction of bicycles and motor vehicles and can discourage dangerous traffic movements such as weaving and passing on the right. In addition to making the road safer for all current users, studies show that bike lanes can reduce traffic congestion by encouraging people to bicycle instead of drive.
