Belle of Louisville Gets Image Makeover

Tuesday February 14, 2006

Historic steamboat will cruise with new logo, paint job

Belle of Louisville logoLouisville’s internationally famous icon, the Belle of Louisville, is getting an image makeover with a new logo and fresh coat of paint.

A new artful rendition of the Belle of Louisville’s logo – which features the ship’s signature steam stacks – was chosen by a panel of judges from nearly 300 entries from a dozen states and five countries.

"This new logo gives the Belle of Louisville a fresh look and a more sophisticated flair, while preserving its tradition," said Mayor Jerry Abramson.
The $1,000-winning logo was designed by Ron Riffle, 55, a native of Columbus, Ohio, who has called Louisville home for 25 years. Riffle is art director at KYK/Ott Creative.

The logo will be used on letterhead, printed marketing materials, signage and Belle of Louisville merchandise, such as t-shirts and souvenirs, said David Karem, executive director of the Waterfront Development Corp., which manages the steamboat.

The Belle of Louisville, a national historic landmark, went into dry-dock in mid-January for its mandatory five-year inspection, performed by the U.S. Coast Guard. She is in dry dock at Jeffboat in Jeffersonville, Ind., and is expected to be released by March 1. When the Belle returns to the Louisville side of the river, she will be cleaned and painted. T

he Belle of Louisville will be ready for the Great Steamboat Race on Wednesday, May 3, as part of the Kentucky Derby Festival, and will be open to the public for a special River History Cruise on May 20. She will resume her regular cruising season on Memorial Day. For the first time, the regular cruising season will include public cruises on Friday nights with live music and dancing.
For tickets, call the Belle of Louisville box office, at 574-2992. Regular-priced tickets are $14 and Friday night cruises are $15. A .jpg file of the new logo is attached.
