Mayor Dedicates Fern Creek Library Expansion

Wednesday April 12, 2006

New children’s area expands busy branch
by 25 percent

Mayor Jerry Abramson today presented a copy of the children’s book The Giving Tree to add to the growing collection at the newly expanded Fern Creek Library. The mayor was joined by Councilman Robin Engel, Library Director Craig Buthod, members of the Library Advisory Commission and children from Bright Expectations Day Care to dedicate the expanded library branch, located in the Cedar Springs shopping center on Bardstown Road near the Gene Snyder Freeway.

"Expanding libraries means expanding knowledge, education and resources for our citizens," Abramson said. "Our expansion here at Fern Creek sets the table for more library growth across Louisville," he added, referring to the city’s commitment of $2 million to acquire property for three new regional libraries in the southwest, south-central and northeast parts of the community.

One of the city’s busiest library branches, the Fern Creek expansion adds 25 percent more space to the existing library, growing from 5,600 square feet to now close to 7,000 square feet. The new space will serve as a dedicated children’s department providing additional room in the original space for other uses, including additional books for general circulation, as well as a new teen area.

The library branch’s computer collection also has grown from 13 to 20 computers, including new-model children’s computers with modular benches that enable the caregiver and child to work on a computer at the same time.

"Our community is just exploding with growth," said 22nd District Councilmember Robin Engel. "It’s a great day in the Fern Creek community to see the library expand."

The Library paid $60,000 to furnish the expansion and is investing an additional $65,000 to expand the branch’s collection with books and DVDs for children and adults. The property’s lease agent, the Brown Noltemeyer Company, paid to adjoin the space that previously housed a cellular telephone store with the original library.

Tom and Donald Weber, Louisville architects and designers with the Weber Group Inc., created and donated a whimsical piece of installation art that frames the new children’s area. The Weber Group specializes in themed environments for amusement parks, restaurants and museums.

The Fern Creek Women’s Club first established a Fern Creek library in 1937 with books donated by the Louisville Free Public Library. Fern Creek became a full branch of Louisville’s library system in 1963.
