Mayor Announces Outstanding High School Seniors

Wednesday April 26, 2006

Mayor Jerry Abramson today announced the recipients of the annual Outstanding High School Seniors Award. Abramson invited the 47 honorees to a special banquet in their honor at the Galt House West Archibald-Cochran ballroom.

Tonight’s award winners come from almost every public and private high school in Louisville. Each high school principal and guidance counselor in the city is asked to nominate a winner for this prestigious award.

The honorees are chosen by their schools for a variety of accomplishments - some winners have 4.0 grade point averages, others are outstanding athletes and several have overcome personal tragedies to succeed in school.

Former Mayor Harvey Sloane started the Outstanding High School Seniors Award in the mid 1980’s and, when Abramson took office in 1986, he expanded the program to include more students.

“I have never missed one of these banquets in my almost 17 years as mayor,” Abramson said. “So many teenagers in our hometown are doing the right things, and I want these students to know our community notices and cares about their success.”
