City Offers Free Bicycle ‘Valet’ for Thunder

Thursday April 19, 2007

Mayor Jerry Abramson today announced that the city will again provide a free bicycle “valet” service during this year’s Thunder Over Free valet parking for Thunder Over Louisville directly behind Slugger FieldLouisville. “As more and more people are turning to bikes as a means of transportation, we want to provide an easy and secure way for folks to park their bicycle, enjoy the day’s festivities, then conveniently be on their way,” Abramson said.

The bicycle parking area will be located on the northeast corner of Witherspoon and Preston streets, just north of Louisville Slugger Field. The area will be staffed continually during Thunder day, Saturday, April 21, beginning at noon through 11 p.m.

Cyclists who use the service will receive a numbered wristband to claim their bicycle and a duplicate numbered wristband will be tagged on their bike. Bike Louisville reflective wristbands and zipper pulls will be given away while supplies last.

Several of the city’s new bike lanes and paths will help cyclists get in and out of downtown easily for Thunder Over Louisville. For information on bicycle routes, visit

“This is another step in our ongoing efforts to become more bicycle friendly as a community,” Abramson said.

Louisville has six times more dedicated bike lanes on Louisville roadways than just two years ago and has begun construction on several improvement projects for key intersections, roadways and trails. The city’s bicycle priorities for the coming year include creating up to 20 more miles of bike lanes across Louisville, beginning a project to improve bicycle and vehicle traffic flow on River Road, and connecting approximately one-quarter of the City of Parks 100-mile greenway around Louisville.
