Mayor Launches Construction of Kentucky Show!
Tuesday March 18, 2008
A new 100-seat theatre being constructed inside the Kentucky Center will be the home of the new Kentucky Show!, a 30-minute multimedia presentation that premiers in Louisville this September.
Mayor Jerry Abramson was joined today by Kentucky Commerce Secretary Marcheta Sparrow and Sharon Potter, chair of Kentucky Show! board, to celebrate the start of construction.
“We are very lucky to live in Kentucky which, in my biased opinion, is the most beautiful state in the country,” Abramson said. “Kentucky Show will feature all that makes our state special.”
Kentucky Show! is being filmed by Donna Lawrence, a celebrated video artist based in Louisville. She has been crisscrossing the state documenting rural and urban life, the mountains of eastern Kentucky, the rolling fields of central Kentucky and the city life of Louisville. She’s filmed and interviewed everyday people and notable Kentuckians, including Lonnie and Muhammad Ali.
The 30-minute show, still in production, will run hourly, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., Tuesdays through Saturdays, and from noon to 5 p.m. on Sundays. The premier gala is set for Friday, Sept. 12.
A traveling version of the show is also being produced.
The $2 million project has been funded from a variety of public and private sources, including $400,000 from the state for the renovation of the former smoking lounge at the Kentucky Center into a theatre. The Greater Louisville Convention and Visitors Bureau donated $318,750 toward production costs.
