Groundbreaking for $3.5 Million Louisville Equestrian Center

Wednesday February 11, 2009

With construction crews ready to begin site work, local dignitaries today joined noted horsewoman and preeminent riding instructor Betsy Webb in a groundbreaking for the $3.5 million Louisville Equestrian Center, a new, state-of-the-art facility that will be located at 2612 S. English Station Road. The 28-acre LEC complex, scheduled to open in early summer 2009, will include a 100 stall barn, two indoor climate-controlled riding arenas, and several open-air facilities and will have access to 60 acres of adjacent land for bridle trails and open riding that is part of the Metro Louisville / 21st Century Park Project along the Floyds Fork corridor.

Joining Ms. Webb for the groundbreaking ceremony were Metro Louisville Mayor Jerry Abramson, Metro Louisville District 20 Councilman Stuart Benson, 21st Century Parks Chairman & CEO Dan Jones; Greater Louisville Inc. President & CEO Joe Reagan; and Greater Louisville Sports Commission President & CEO Diane McGraw.

“The Louisville Equestrian Center will be a horse-friendly facility with full-service amenities for people,” Webb said. “We will provide the finest equestrian instruction and training, safe and well-trained horses and services for all levels of riders with an emphasis on safety, education and fun.”

A new home for the highly successful Betsy Webb Stables, in operation since 1999 and currently the largest riding lesson program in the Louisville area, LEC will continue to offer lessons, boarding services, riding camps, horse shows, horse brokerage and trading, while adding corporate and social events, sponsorships and retail activities.

“The Louisville Equestrian Center represents a terrific example of a successful, visionary businesswoman taking full advantage of a public-private partnership,” said Metro Louisville Mayor Jerry Abramson. “Betsy Webb and her team are to be commended for investing $3.5 million in the future of Louisville to build her business while creating jobs in the horse industry for which the commonwealth is so well known.

“We are pleased that the Louisville Equestrian Center has developed a win-win working relationship with the Floyd’s Fork Parks project.” (Mayor’s quote to be vetted.)

The LEC tract connects two sections of the Floyd’s Fork park system. In return for access to riding trails on 60 acres of pristine bottomland along Floyd’s Fork, LEC will provide an easement across its 28 acres for the park system’s paved walking and biking trail.

“The Louisville Equestrian Center is a wonderful addition to Louisville’s recreational landscape that will provide world-class riding facilities to Louisville’s riding community,” commented Dan Jones, chairman & CEO, 21st Century Parks, Inc. “The fact that the Louisville Equestrian Center is so closely connected with the Floyd’s Fork Greenway Project makes it even more exciting. Betsy Webb’s willingness to work with 21st Century Parks on a critical connection for the Louisville Loop is a wonderful outcome of this project.”

Pallas Partners, an independent, Louisville-based strategic business-planning firm, helped develop and implement the business plan and secure the financing package for LEC.
