Abramson Visits West Virginia to Speak on Merged Government

Tuesday July 7, 2009

Charleston, Kanawha County consider consolidation

Mayor Jerry Abramson left today on a two-day trip to Charleston, West Virginia, where he’ll speak about Louisville’s success with merged government.

Charleston and Kanawha County are considering a merger vote in 2010, and Abramson will speak to a several hundred civic and business leaders during a community-wide summit.

“The consolidation of Louisville and Jefferson County has shown the nation that an effective government is a merged, lean government,” Abramson said. “I’ll be taking that message to the people of Charleston.

Abramson said he’ll tell Charleston residents that Louisville’s merger “let us lead more effectively, more forcefully, when faced with opportunities and challenges – from planning a new downtown arena to managing budget shortfalls; from working to keep jobs in Louisville to maximizing federal stimulus funding.”
