Improved Riverview Park Open After Phase 1 Development

Tuesday October 12, 2010

New playgrounds, boat ramp, parking await users

Boaters are flocking to a new boat ramp, and children are climbing, sliding, rocking and rolling through the brightly colored playground -- following completion of the first phase of a major transformation at Riverview Park in southwest Louisville.

Located off Greenwood road and hugging the Ohio River, the 87-acre Riverview Park will be developed much like Waterfront Park, with a similar impact on its surrounding area according to Mayor Jerry Abramson.

“One of the most beautiful settings in all of Louisville, along a quiet, scenic stretch of the Ohio River – now has recreational opportunities to match, for all to enjoy,” Abramson said. “Citizens who have been watching the work unfold are excited about the transformation of this park, and have been eager to get in and use it.”

The first phase, costing $1.9 million, includes construction of a new boat ramp, a handicapped-accessible playground and separate spray area, improved parking and new restrooms. Grading work has further improved the look of the park while creating additional areas for recreation, relaxing and taking in the view.

David Karem, director of the Waterfront Development Corporation, which will oversee the development of Riverview Park, said it will take many years to complete it, just as it did with Waterfront Park. The project will be done in phases as money is available. The total cost for Riverview Park is expected to be $30 million to $40 million.

Riverview, which is roughly the same size as Waterfront Park, has been a city park for decades. It is popular with fisherman because of its boat ramp, and with river watchers because of its scenic vantage point overlooking the river and the adjacent wooded hills of southern Indiana.

Metro Parks will provide the day-to-day operation of Riverview until the development is complete.
