Mayor Fischer Honors Bellarmine Basketball Team

Friday March 25, 2011

Declares “Scarlet and Silver Day” Saturday
Knights play for Division II championship

Mayor Greg Fischer today proclaimed Saturday to be “Scarlet and Silver Day” in honor of the Bellarmine Knights basketball team, which will compete for the national Division II championship Saturday in Springfield, Mass.

Bellarmine, coached by Scotty Davenport, used a late surge Thursday night to beat Minnesota State and improve its record to 32-2 – the best in school history. Bellarmine will play for its first national title at 1 p.m. Saturday against BYU-Hawaii.

“We are very proud of Coach Davenport’s team, what they’ve accomplished and how they will represent our city in this national championship game,” Fischer said. “The Knights play hard, with a lot of teamwork and are a true hometown team, with six players from Louisville and others from around the region.”

The Knights have been ranked second in NCAA Division II polls all season. They were Great Lakes Valley Conference champions in 2010 and 2011.

Davenport is in his sixth year with the Knights, after serving as an assistant coach at the University of Louisville under Denny Crum and Rick Pitino, and earlier as head coach at Louisville’s Ballard High School.
